An Island Without Us: Art + Science Show by Jim Verhagen – Ann Coen Studio
August 2, 2019 @ 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM
The Ann Coen Gallery will be hosting “Northside” Jim Verhagen, the first weekend in August for a one-of-a-kind Fine Art and Science Show titled, “An Island Without Us.” Jim’s art is a unique blend of storytelling, illustration, essay, and photography, combined to tell the real-life stories of individual wild animals and their families. He uses anthropomorphism to explore his themes in surprising and humorous ways and to promote fresh, bold perspectives on the plight of wild animals in the modern world. As a trusted, experienced advocate for wildlife science and management, his extensive body of work is a stunning collection of rare and intimate glimpses into the lives of endangered coastal birds at their nests, and of the scientists who work with them there.
Verhagen’s work has earned him several national film and publication credits, both as an author and a visual artist. He is a contributor to the National Audubon Society’s Guide To Ethical Bird Photography. Jim is also a data scientist and the creator of the NestStory (TM) software used by federal, state, and private organizations across the U.S. to manage and perform analysis on nesting bird populations. He is a founding board member of the Little Egg Foundation; a 501c non-profit dedicated to using technology, science, and educational outreach to help the conser- vation of endangered coastal wildlife.
“An Island Without Us” will showcase Jim’s art and expertise about LBI’s endangered wildlife to deliver an unbelievable experience for all. Come and see the Island in a way you’ve never seen it before. The Opening Reception will be held at 6pm on August 2nd, 2019 at the Ann Coen Gallery and the show will remain up until August 4th. All profits from the sale of Jim’s work will benefit the Little Egg Foundation and support their research along the coast of New Jersey.
